I'm sure this is publicly available somewhere but my google-fu has failed me. What I'd like to do is download the most accurate lat/long/alt data available for the world. This can exclude oceanic regions. Also, I do not need addresses. Mostly, what I need is: given a lat/long what is the alt? Google Maps does not currently have altitude data available and I'd prefer not to use public web services as there is no SLA.
The best I've been able to find has been: http://www.geonames.org/export/ ... In fact, they are also a great example of why I can't use public web services for these lookups: http://geonames.wordpress.com/2009/01/25/what-to-do-against-ddos-effects/
Thanks in advance!!!!

You can download the Digital Elevation Model for the US at http://seamless.usgs.gov/
I believe it also has international data, but that is less accurate.

I don't know where to find it currently, but the term you should be googling for is "Digital Elevation Model".

you can get the geolocalized articles of wikipedia :
using the wikipedia API : http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php
via DBpedia http://wiki.dbpedia.org/Downloads32#geographiccoordinates
via freebase http://www.freebase.com/view/location/location + freebase API

We're currently using geokit to determine our users' countries of origin, but we're concerned about the volumens of queries we're going to generate. Since most of our visitors are one-offs, just caching the results isn't sufficient; we need something with its own look-up table. Is there a freely available database we can pull from every so often? Or is there an alternative we haven't considered?
After seeing this question we went with MaxMind GeoLite Country which has a free IP-to-country map downloadable in CSV format. Apparently it has some issues with AOL users but it's been good enough for our purposes so far.
Have you considered Geonames ?

I am looking for a good quality and reliable mapping solution for South Africa.
We require similar functionality to Bing and Google. ie plotting markers on the map, geocoding, drawing polygons, popups on the map showing content etc.
So far Google maps looks like the winner, but are there other options that you would recommend.
thanks
The Maptitude Mapping Software is used in South Africa, see: caliper.com/Maptitude/SouthAfrica.htm, and allows you to interact with data from a variety of sources including Google and OpenStreetMap.
Disclaimer: I may receive some form of compensation, financial or otherwise, from my recommendation or link.
I know that the folks that run linfinity have done lots of work in Africa. they'll be glad to help you
I came across PlanetGIS today by chance. It looks like they may be a good source of data which could be used on top of a Google Maps solution (I'd recommend OpenLayers personally though).

It looks like the best options thus for are http://www.openstreetmap.org/ or Google Maps. Thanks All

I'm thinking in build a iPhone app for get recipes. So, I'm looking for resources where I can get the data of that recipes in a way I can use in my app, store locally and/or query.
I'm interested in get nutrition facts, photos, etc... I understand that maybe I need to collect the data from several sources (like flickr photos?), but any starting point will be very useful.
You can download the USDA database[1] here[2]. No photos, but lots of interesting data.

http://www.ars.usda.gov/Services/docs.htm?docid=18879
The FatSecret Platform might be helpful for nutrition facts. They have RESTful and JavaScript APIs that are free if you link to their site.
Freebase contains useful information about all sorts of things, I'm sure there is probably information aplenty about nutritional value of food stuffs. It is probably also helpful that it is easily accessible programmatically through their API.
The Punchfork Recipe API provides recipe data from food blogs and mainstream recipe sites, along with thumbnail images.

I'm creating rails application where it allow users to add geo-location data for restaurants, shops, etc., to a (Google) map and query it.
First I started with http://geoapi.com, as there is a feature for creating our own entities and querying them. But the service doesn't support my country well. So, I decided to create and store the geo-location data on my own database.
Can someone please tell me what are the best gems/plugins available for this?
I found these, but I'd like to get some feedback from you. Thanks

I would reccomend PostGIS and then use a Ruby Connector.

I am looking for a way to get the essence or the most important aspect of a webpage? If I provide a URL, is there any external service which can accomplish this? I am not looking for snap.com like service as it provides a snapshot.
I might be willing to even implement such a system on my own. For beginning I do not want to put excessive effort, but rather would love to able to get some basic results. Are there any thoughts on how I may approach this problem?
You can try Yahoo's Term extraction service
Update 02-May-2012
Yahoo has release a new Content Analysis Web service which will be replacing the Term extraction service. It can be invoked by syntactically sweet YQL as shown below
select * from contentanalysis.analyze where url='http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/11/world/europe/greece-main/index.html';
There is also AlchemyAPI which offers a weservice which may serve your purpose.
By snippet, do you mean like a quote that sums up the entire page you want to link to?
So if snap.com isn't a fancy, what about the entire page? For verbosity's sake? You could try out BackupURL if you want like a cache of the entire page of the site instead just a snapshot of a portion of it.
