I don't have any experience programming and I'm trying to learn Ruby as my first language.
I followed the instructions at http://installrails.com/, used RailsInstaller, and updated gems. My problem comes when I try to create a new application. My terminal tries to run bundle install and I get a message the SSL certifications could not be verified.
I tried numerous solutions for this problem but they do not work. I went to http://railsapps.github.io/openssl-certificate-verify-failed.html
which told me that one workaround was to save cacerts.pem in my Rails folder and make ruby aware of it. Still didn't work.
Am I doing something wrong or is this a common problem for those on Windows (as a different guide seemed to imply?) Any solution for this?
EDIT: According to this guide, you can obtain the new trust certificate and the guide tells you where to put it. It hasn't solved my issue yet, but it seems to work for some others.

I had the same problem on windows10. You can change the default gem source url. In your Gemfile you should add a http url:
source 'http://rubygems.org/'
#source 'https://rubygems.org' - not working on windows10
it helps - but it's rather a workaround, not a solution :)

hope I can get some help with a problem I have been having. I am getting into Ruby on Rails and used a tutorial (http://guides.rubyonrails.org/getting_started.html) to try to get started with it. It says I need Sqlite3. I followed the steps up to the point where it says to use the ruby bin\rails server command in command prompt. However, when I try to do this, I get the following error message.
When I try to install Sqlite3, I use the x86 version for Windows, as I am using Windows 8.1.
I don't know what I am doing wrong...I am not even sure if the SQlite3 files are in the right place. I use command prompt to check if I have Ruby, Rails, and Sqlite3 all installed, which I do. I also know I have the SQlite3 Ruby gem installed. I have also added SQlite3 to my PATH system variable, but that doesn't seem to work either. I always get the same above error message no matter what I do.
Anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
I recommend setting up a Linux VM on your Windows PC and start coding on it instead of on Windows. You'll keep encountering many issues in the future if you stick with Windows. Windows & ruby on rails don't go well together. So, it's better to go with some Linux flavor or preferably Mac.
If you are going to be learning RoR with the goal of ever doing anything serious in the future, here's the best advice I can give to someone starting out: Buy a Mac. NEVER try to use Microsoft for anything but Microsoft office... you'll just end up so frustrated that you will give up. RoR is NOT the toy to try "round peg, square hole" with.
Next, being that your on a Mac, NEVER use sqlite3. You can easily use the correct database which is PostgreSQL. Why is this important?
You're starting out. Keep things very simple. Get a free Heroku account, and install the CLI (for mac). You can then do: "heroku local" to run your code locally (for building), and because it's Mac/PostgreSQL, when you go to push that code live, everything is the same (Heroku is going to be PostgreSQL) so you won't get lost for days trouble shooting the differences between where you're building the code, and where you're running the code.
I'm following Vic Ramon's tutorial. I tried to use the latest version of Rails and Ember-source and I get the following error when visiting home page:

Ember gems im using:
Using emblem-source 0.3.18
Using ember-data-source 1.0.0.beta.14.1
Using ember-rails 0.16.1
Using emblem-rails 0.2.2
This could be due to some version incompatibilities between your versions of ember-related gems, as there were quite substantial changes in recent versions of ember (e.g. introduction of HTMLBars, etc.)
Your best bet is to clone the original repo and then try to upgrade individual gems and check if it still works after each upgrade. This way you will be able to identify the troubling gem.
I have verified that the original repo code indeed works with the versions of gems in its current Gemfile.lock.
If you are starting a new Rails + Ember app, ember-cli-rails is probably the way to go, giving you the best of both worlds.
Emblem was the culprit. Replacing .emblem with .handlebars fixed the problem. I tried the tip from emblem-rails git page and icluded
gem "emblem-source", github: "machty/emblem.js"
but that didn't change anything.
I also followed this tutorial (alongside a few others) and I encountered several issues alongside the way ranging from handling templates to setting up the JSON API. I don't see your entire source code so I cannot pinpoint the exact problem. However, it seems that we have similar projects, so you can compare your code to my blog project source code and see what is causing these issues. Comparing to Ramon's tutorial, my blog has implemented everything until chapter 15.

If you are a beginner like myself, then I recommend avoiding CoffeeScript and Emblem and sticking to Javascript as much as possible for the first months because you will find more resources and examples. Also, let me know if you need assistance in setting up the project as I used .gitignore to hide things like secrets.yml
I have installed Redmine on a shared Bluehost account and at first sight it seems to be working.

But just as i started navigating around i noticed that there seem to be a routing problem because some of the pages are returning a 404 error code for a reason i don't understand yet.
The error log shows no information regarding this problem.
The url is on redmine.example.com , the user/pass are still admin/admin.
I have identified that any URL regarding a project is failing, for example:

http://redmine.example.com/projects/21
http://redmine.example.com/projects/21/issues
(Currently i have reset the DB for privacy concerns)
In order to prove my theory that it was regarding the projects issue, i went into the projects controller file found in app/controllers/projects_controller.rb and tried to put some abort("Foo") here and there but i couldn't see my message with any of the links that are not working so i thought maybe the problem is not there and is probably in the routing process. So i checked the config/routes.rb file and comparing it with my local version they seem identical
I am not sure what to try next as i am not a Ruby developer. Let me know what kind of info you need in order to help debug this problem.
Eventually i got it working by using FastCGI.
In order to do that, i simply created a .htaccess file and a dispatcher.fcgi as shown in the answer here : Redmine 2 on Hostmonster apache fcgi: Rails application failed to start properly
Don't forget to SetEnv GEM_PATH to your ruby gems path in your .htaccess file and it should work after restarting (pkill dispatcher.fcgi)
I would like to try ruby on rails on mac. I want to install ruby on rails, tried to find some guide for installation, and I get this:

It does not have a clear, I mean, well documentation for beginner to follow the steps? Or, thats all for the installation? How to start the webserver, where to store ruby files etc, ... how do I get started???
Any advise, or links or tutorials for a total ruby beginner to get started?

You need to install xcode first though to avoid some errors. This is because some of the headers in the default ruby install on macs is incomplete without it.
Well you need GCC, which used to be with XCode only but over at ye olde GitHub, it's been packaged as a standalone. Next up you can follow either this tutorial by Katz or Dan Benjamin's guide on HiveLogic.
Keep in mind the state of the art in Ruby and Rails is fast moving so the guides might not take you all the way there. The most crucial parts are getting RVM installed properly and working and getting everything on the right version. It's not too tricky to work through, and there's probably no undocumented issues in the process now.
I am on the verge of actually hiring someone to fix this
for me, but I hope it doesn't come to that.
I have no experience with Rails/Ruby, but I do know my way around
computers in general.
I have two domains on one server (Hostingrails, I am beginning to hate
them more and more these days).
My secondary domain works 100% fine.
But for the past few days, my primary domain has not been working, it
has been giving me 503 Errors. I've opened a ticket regarding this, and
they told me to SSH into my server and reset "Mongrel". I've done this
using the code they gave me; "mongrel_rails start -d -e production
-p13930"
It seemed to have worked, but the problem was still there. The log says
the error is something about:
"require': no such file to load -- dispatcher (LoadError)"
I've re-opened a ticket concerning this, and Hostingrails basically told
me that it is not their problem anymore and that it's solely up to me to
fix it. Brilliant.
So I spent a good part of the day looking and changing things around
through SSH (probably wasn't the greatest idea) but I still keep getting
503'd on my website.
However, I recently found out that my index file HAS to be index.html,
or it will not render the page. index.htm or index.php will result in a
503. If I set the index page to index.html, it worked. Which is strange,
my htaccess file allowed for all.
Another problem, I think I have inadvertently changed something in my
settings while I was SSH'd in. When I do "bundle install" it installs
the gems into my own private webspace, for example /home/mywebsite. But
I believe on my shared plan, all the rails/ruby/gems etc are all under
/usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p0/ which I don't think I have access to.
How do I change the directory to the default one? For example, before
the error log said:
/usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p0/gems/activesupport-3.0.0/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:239:in
`require': no such file to load -- dispatcher (LoadError)
Now it says:
/home/mysite/.gems/gems/activesupport-3.0.0/lib/active_support/dependencies.rb:239:in

I think that's everything for now. Here are the rails installed on my
server by the host:
Installed at (3.0.0): /usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p0
(2.3.8): /usr/local/rvm/gems/ruby-1.9.2-p0
(again, I think my mongrel is looking in the wrong place, as my gems are
now being installed into /home/mywebsite/ instead of
/usr/local/rvm/gems/) Is it possible to someone reset the settings I've
changed back into my host's default one?
Would anyone be willing to take the time and try and fix this with me? I
am pretty annoyed at Hostingrails, since I didn't do anything to create
this problem, and they are outright refusing to help me. Why is my
primary domain getting 503 errors when my secondary domain works fine?
Mongrel is not compatible to ruby 1.9.2. You need use a fork of mongrel to use it https://github.com/kyusik/mongrel_cluster
I advice you to user thin/passenger or unicorn instead of mongrel.

Maybe you could try using Ruby 1.8.7 - it causes less trouble in general at this time.
Not an answer to your question in particular, but if you're new to Ruby and Rails, then hosting your own stuff can be a daunting task.
Instead, try Heroku - simply push your Rails app to Heroku with git and you're good to go. They support custom domainnames for free.
