I have a requirement to Serverspec test a Cloudformation stack that is created by a Jenkins job called "Create_Stack".
A second Jenkins job will call the existing Create_Stack job via a Parameterized Trigger, and then in a subsequent Execute Shell step execute the Serverspec test suite.
However, in order to do that, the Execute Shell step needs to know the Cloudformation Stack Name.
At the moment, the Stack Name exists as an Environment Variable in the Create_Stack job, and it also exists in the archived artifact file containing the returned output from the aws cloudformation create-stack command.
I have considered looking up Stack Name in the artifact file in $WORKSPACE/../../Create_Stack/workspace/my-stack-output.json. This isn't ideal as it's awkward, and also vulnerable to a race condition if someone were to run this job again immediately while my test was running.
Is there a clean way to make the Stack Name available to subsequent Execute Shell build steps?
At some point I figured out that the EnvInject Plugin can be used to solve this problem.

So this is my entire Use case:
I have a parameterized build job which accepts file parameters. After the build I need to send a mail with that file and the size of the file. For this, I'm trying to add the name and size of the file as an Env variable using EnvInject Plugin.
But EnvInject is in the Build Environment step. The file parameter gets stored in the Workspace of the build only in the Build step, not in Build environment. So, there will be an error like File not found.
Due to which, I'm trying a crooked way of defining a properties file somewhere on my local system.I'm mentioning this properties file in "Properties File Path" of Inject Environment variables. In the build step I'm adding FOO=BAR and other values in the file so that I can use those values as my env variables down the line, like when I configure my e-mail template in Post Build Actions.
Can this process be done easily? I was initially making the properties file in JENKINS_HOME. I just got to know that I'm not allowed to do that as in master-agent architecture, JENKINS_HOME will be different and build will fail.
PS-1. The workspace gets deleted after every build
2. Any other plugins which can be used? If possible, please suggest without installing some new plugin as I'm not Jenkins admin
One way of solving this problem is by creating 3 different jobs as follows -
job 1 --> should call below 2 jobs(job 2 & job 3)
job 2:
Build --> Trigger/call builds on other projects --> job 2(block until the triggerred projects finish their builds)
select"Build on the same node" from Add Parameters.
job 3:
Build --> Trigger/call builds on other projects --> job 2(block until the triggerred projects finish their builds)
select"Build on the same node" from Add Parameters.
Job 2 (Create this job as follows):
Execution API --> using "GET_FILE" option you can download the required details on to the current working directory of your job.
Execute shell -->
now within "Execute Shell", download "consoleText" using wget command.
process the "consoleText" using unix command prepare a key-value pairs and store it under /tmp folder. i.e. "/tmp/env.prop"
Job 3 (Create this job as follows):
Bindings:
select "Inject environment variable to the build process" and under 'Properties File Path' enter "/tmp/env.prop"
now you can use the variable which you created in Job2 in the current job without any issue.
please note that it is important to select "Build on the same node" in Job 1, because this will preserve the data and it allows other jobs to access this information.
Let me know if its not clear.
I have a script to run to which i give multiple parameters in a loop, it takes each parameter completes the cycle and then the next one.
I need to run this on Jenkins, is there any option that i can run multiple builds on a single job ? I mean each parameter should be a single build and all the builds should run in queue not parallel.
We have two options :
1.) In my case i use a shell script and csv file as an input to it. So i wrote a simple groovy script for getting the inputs from csv file. Then i used parameterized plugin to run the script
2.) In case if you want to see the workflow on GUI you can go for pipeline
I have a jenkins job that runs some tests and promotes the build if all tests pass.
I then have a second job that has a 'Promoted build parameter' which is used for deployments.
THe idea is that the deply job should let you pick one of the prompted builds for deploying. The issue I'm having is that I can pick a promoted build, but I have not idea how I access information about the build.
I've named the build parameter
SELECTED_BUILD
And according to the docs this should then be available via the environment.
The problem is that it doesn't seem to be bound to anything.
If I run a build step to exectute this sheel script:
echo $SELECTED_BUILD
echo ${SELECTED_BUILD}
The values are not interpolated / set.
Any idea how I can access the values of this param?
Many Thanks,
Vackar
Inject the information as variable user jenkins plugin (eject evn variable).
while triggering parameterized build on other job, pass above variable as parameter to next job.
I'm using the Scriptler plugin for Jenkins, and am having a hard time finding any information on how to share the scriptler scripts I'm writing between scripts. I've tried using the ScriptHelper from the Scriptler API, but have run into issues when passing in arguments to the script.
Anyone else come across this and solve it? Is there a standard way to do this (without calling the Jenkins REST API) to execute a script?
More Details
We have a full build MultiJob that contains many phase jobs, each with their own artifacts, with a 3 day time to live on them. When a this full build job is promoted, a scriptler runs against it, pulling each of the phase jobs artifacts into the full build job. By doing so, we can keep the full build alive forever, without changing the lifetime on the artifacts for each phase job (essentially 'keep this build forever' on the full build, ignoring the lifetimes set in the phase jobs.
We also want to pull these artifacts into a deploy job. The idea is that we can point a deploy job to a full build, and it will pull out the artifacts we specify. If the full build is promoted, this script will pull the artifacts directly from the full build job, otherwise, it will pull them from the internal phase jobs. Since we have 2 scripts that work with MultiJobs, I would like to be able to share this code between them.
The script would take a MultiJob name and build number, and return the individual phase job's build numbers, build statuses, and artifact information.
This is possible using Groovy capabilities, though I don't know if Scripler supports it directly. If you are running on the master node, you can use Groovy evaluate. Scriptler scripts are stored as Groovy files on the file system of the master node in the $JENKINS_HOME/scriptler/scripts directory. The Scripter ID is the function name within that directory.
Here is a very simple example. It uses two files. The first is the parameterized function, findByScm.groovy, which finds jobs using a give source control type. The second script, findByGitScm.groovy will evaluate the first function for Git SCMs and print the results.
findByScm.groovy
import jenkins.model.*
jenkins = Jenkins.instance;
// Notice that myScmType is not defined in this function
scmJobs = jenkins.items
.findAll { job -> job.scm != null && job.scm.type == myScmType }
findByGitScm.groovy
// This is supplying the argument to findByScm.groovy
myScmType = 'hudson.plugins.git.GitSCM'
// Now we are evaluating the script
evaluate(new File("${System.getProperty('JENKINS_HOME')}/scriptler/scripts/findByScm.groovy"))
// scmJobs is a variable which was introduced in findByScm.groovy
scmJobs.each { println it }
I want to know how can we parameterize build in jenkins. I need to create a jenkins job which will contain 5 sub jobs in it. i need to create a drop down , selelct any of the module and build it. But the script used is different for every sub build? can any1 guide on the same is it possible.
string parameters in Jenkins result in environment variables of the same name.
So, you could write a wrapper script in bash which would look for the environment variables that could be set as a result of the parameterized build (i.e. your 5 sub-jobs) in a series of if-elif statements, and within each one, you would invoke the necessary build script from there.
The build script that you would have Jenkins run would be the wrapper script.
