XCode: laying out scrolling content in IB - ios

TL;DR: What's the best way to layout over-sized scroll-view content in Interface Builder?
I am trying to figure out the least painful way to layout offscreen / scrolling content in Interface Builder. My current approach has been to tweak scrollview content width and height constraints to see all content in IB, before reverting to proper contraints for building, but this gets to be a hassle. That said, I would prefer to do more more graphically, and less programmatically for general ease of editing.
The general approaches that I can think of are:
use embedded segues to build up views in a size-accurate fashion (the most intuitive, flow-charty approach)
tweak constraints for editing, reset for building
use placeholder values / constraints in IB (haven't tried this yet)
layout over-sized content programmatically
In more detail, I am trying to build a vertically scrolling view comprised of sub views. Each sub view is self contained and can potentially appear in more than one context and I would like to keep them isolated (in fact, I am embedding them as well, but that does not affect the question). What I would like to do, is use IB to layout a tall composite content view. I would then like to create the outer scroll view with a single content view again of a container view, embedding the composite content view. Ie. the grey content view on the left embeds the taller red / blue content on the right, and I am wondering if I can deduce the height, so it could be device agnostic (the views are square, so they will take their width from the device)
So summarized, is there anyway that I could derive the hosting scrollview's contentView height from the actual height of the content of the embedded view, or should I instead use approaches 2, 3, or other?
To be clear, Auto Layout requires that scroll view content views define constraints for the edges, and width / height dimensions. In my case, I would like to be able to preset the width to the device width, but leave the height to be derived from the red/blue content view. IB won't let me drag constraints between the embedding and embedded scenes in Storyboard, and when I leave the field missing, it uses the prototype values for the content height.
Is it recommended to use placeholder sizes (3) in IB to make the content visible for editing, knowing that run-time constraints will render it properly (ie over-size scroll views in Storyboard so all scrolling content is visible)? Conversely, is it foolish to even try - should I do all scroll-view content composition programmatically (4)?

Placeholder constraints allow you to get by, but force you to change the priority of the run-time constraints, and trigger IB / layout errors and warnings for conflicting constraints, despite selecting the placeholder checkbox on conflicting design-time-only constraints.

Use a UITableviewController with static cells. The cells will be your content views.
You can scroll the tableview down in IB to see the cells at the bottom and you get a nice extra behaviour like scrolling the views to the correct position when the keyboard is opened so it doesn't hide the textfield you clicked on.
And you don't have to worry about the scroll view at all.
If you want to reuse your content views you can make the table dynamic of course and provide the content views by code.

How to make UIScrollView height dynamic from storyboard with the new Safe Layout feature?

I used to make my scroll views have dynamic height using auto layout constraints (adding a content view to the scroll view to hold all the views and pinning them etc.) But now as with the new Safe Layout feature, I cannot achieve the same dynamic height scroll view behavior despite all my trials.
All I want is a scrollable screen with an image at the top, with title and text labels below whose content is not known beforehand.

UISlider causing horizontal scrolling

I have a simple screen, with a slider and a label positioned next to each other horizontally. I have embedded these inside a UIScrollView (I set this to fill the screen and used 'Add missing constraints'), because I will need vertical scrolling later down the line. I don't however, want horizontal scrolling. I have seen numerous posts on here and other sources about people wanting to disable horizontal scrolling, however I'm not sure that's what I want to do, I think I need to restrict the UISlider from causing the horizontal scrolling; I think it is trying to take up more width than the screen. I have added what I think are the necessary horizontal constraints:
Leading space to container for the UISlider
Horizontal spacing to the UILabel, and
Trailing space to container for the UILabel
But this still causes horizontal scrolling, and the UISlider's are the cause, they are taking up more room than I want, as seen below:
I have tried disabling horizontal scrolling in the code using a few techniques, one being:

but this does not seem to stop the horizontal scrolling.

My suggestion is to never use Add missing constraints. It never does what you really want.
Here's the problem. You are laying out your UI on a ViewController in the Storyboard that is square. Apple did this to remind you that you need to be flexible in your design, but it doesn't match the size of any device. When you Add missing constraints, it uses the absolute dimensions of that square to create the constraints which are certainly wrong.
In your specific case, it is giving the slider a width that is too wide, which is why the slider goes off the right side of your screen.
Here's the trick about scroll views. If the contents inside of a scroll view are wider than the scroll view itself, then that content will scroll. The same applies vertically: if the contents inside of a scroll view are taller than the scroll view, then the contents will scroll.
In order to design this to work on all phones, you need to make sure that the contents of the scroll view are laid out correctly for each phone size. Which certainly means you don't want to use specific widths for both the label and the slider because you'll end up with the wrong width for some device, if not all of them.
The best way to do this is to:
Drag out the scroll view and add it to your ViewController. Add constraints to make sure it is properly sized on all phones, such as attaching it on all sides to its superview with a fixed distance.
Drag out a new UIView and drop it on the scroll view. Drag its edges until it exactly matches the size of the scroll view. This will be your content view. Pin all four edges of this content view to the scroll view with offsets of 0.
Here's a tricky bit. Even though you've pinned the content view to the scroll view, its size of free to grow because that is what allows it to be bigger than the scroll view itself and allow there to be content to scroll over. To keep your scroll view from scrolling horizontally, you need to make sure the content view has the same width as the scroll view on all devices. To do that, find the scroll view and the content view in the Document Outline to the left of the Storyboard. Control-drag from the content view to the scroll view and select Equal Widths from the pop-up.
You still haven't told your content view how tall it should be. For now, give it an explicit height constraint of 1000. That will be enough to scroll.
Now, add your label and slider to the content view. In addition to constraining them to each other and to the edges of the content view, you will need to give your label a width constraint. Then Auto Layout will have all of the information it needs to compute the width of your slider. Auto Layout knows how wide the content view is (which will be different on different devices), it knows how wide your label is, and how far everything is from everything else, so it will just stretch the slider to fill in the rest.
If you do all of this, you will have a UI that is properly sized for all devices in all orientations that scrolls vertically.
Just embed all view in your UIScrollView in a UIView, give it the required constraints then the slider and label will stay.
That worked for me just now.
UIScrollView is special when you want use AutoLayout with it, subviews can not be added directly, it needs a container view to constraint the contentSize of UIScrollView, Auto Layout Guide:Working with Scroll Views explains the detail reason, and you can find many solutions to solve UIScrollView's auto layout on Google, Such as this answer.
To be honest, it's confused and complicated to understand UIScrollView's auto layout, but if you overcome this, others auto layout question is easy to resolve.

How do I prepare a UIViewController's view for being added to a UIStackView?

This is what I'm trying to do...
I have one view controller that needs to dynamically display different subviews based on the presence of some data.
Here is a simple mockup. Each colored block represents a unique subview.
Sometimes the green block needs to be at the top, sometimes the green block won't display at all, sometimes the light blue block will be something different, etc.
Each subview has interactive elements, so I've been creating and adding them like so:
Defining a new view controller
Defining its view
Calling addChildViewController and didMoveToParentViewController
Calling addSubview on myNewViewController.view
Using SnapKit to make auto layout constraints to position the view
I want to transition to UIStackView because it seems a good support system for this view because all I need to do is stack its subviews. I'm seeing many conflicting constraint errors and unexpected view frames when trying to add subviews with their own inner auto layout constraints.
Question
Am I setting myself up for failure here by embedding the views of 4-6 view controllers in the view of one view controller?
Also, how do I give the added views properties like minimum heights or content sizes without seeing many breaking constraints with UIStackView? (So they can stack, but one of them is say, 400 tall, and the other is 200 tall)

You can absolutely do this using UIContainerViews combined with UIStackViews and UIScrollViews, it's a complicated setup so here's a starter project to get you started:

Here's what that project looks like:
You want the containers to have different sizes. In order to do that, simply add height constraints to the containers with Autolayout. If you want to change the height of the scrolling. Then you'll need to change the height constraint of the UIStackView.
Brief Explanation
When creating this setup, you have to make sure the UIStackView distribution setting stays in fill. That way you can set height constraints on UIContainerViews.
When setting up anything in a UIScrollView you have to make sure that the object is pinned to the edges of the scroll view and has a defined width and height, otherwise the scrollview will throw a constriant error. I think of it like the scrollview tries to press in on all sides of your content view and if any side gives, the scrollview won't be able to present it properly.

Constraints in ios

I am learning constraints and spent whole day applying them to the following screen.It is not getting displayed properly in landscape mode.Basically i am not getting how to fix vertical space between ,say, label-Welcome to BBBB and textfield-username so that textfield always appears below the label yet the spacing between them is adjusted according to the screens of different size. If i go for Pin\Vertical space, it automatically fixes the constant value.
Remove the label (or just move it out of the way).
Fill the space that you want to resize with a view.
Constrain this view to the objects above and below and to the sides of the parent view.
Put your label into this view and constrain it to the top of this view and centred to it.
You may need to change the constraints on the objects above and below it to stop them from changing height in an unwanted manner.
This new view should now resize as the device changes orientation but the label should remain at the top of it.
Repeat on other areas of your layout (i.e put things that are not moving around as you want them into sub views and constrain these views to resize accordingly). Experiment with using variable heights, fixed heigh constraints and 'equal heights with' constraints on the views that you add to get them to resize as you need.
Edit: but you have a lot of vertically stacked items in that view - you may never get them all to fit into a horizontal orientation. You may need to remove a few, or add a scroll view or force that view only to layout in portrait mode or... Don't forget to check that it works on all devices you are targeting.
#Ali Beadle was right. Since i had a lot of vertically stacked items, lining them up in landscape mode was not possible. So, i went for scrollview.
I have taken a ScrollView first and then a UIView named ContentView on that ScrollView. I have made the width of ContentView equal to the width of parent UIView and kept its height fixed to 568. In my code i set
_contentViewHeight.constant = self.view.frame.size.height;
Now it scrolls in landscape mode while in potrait mode, it does'nt scroll.
I run into Autolayout problems all the time. But I finally figured out a way to overcome a lot of issues that arise from it.
I simply will use a container-View like ScrollView or even a plain old UIView, place all my controls in it. thats it. this makes things a lot easier for autolayout to figure out the constraints. in your case you could just use a UIView.
-start off by removing all the constraints you have I would start by selecting each control in the XIB and see if it has width/height constraint, select it then press the delete key then at the bottom of the project explorer you'll see all the constraints that auto layout has select each one then delete. that should get rid of any complaints that auto-layout might have.
-Place a UIView object inside your main View then
-move all the controls inside it. Then
-add the necessary constraints for the container view so it'll resize in different orientations and don't worry about any constraints inside the container view (auto layout will figure them out automatically).
that does the trick for me usually.

iOS and interface builder: misplaced view (e.g. UITableViewCell)

I am using interface builder to create a masterview details application. However
when I run the app the cell gets misaligned.
Here is how it looks both on the simulator and on interace builder:

I have noticed that this happens also in the detail view controller that's why I choose the title of "misplaced view":
The problem in the first screen shot seems to be that you are not supplying a tall enough height for the cell. Thus some of the views on one cell are actually appearing on top of the cell below it. You need to fix your table view's rowHeight.
In the second screen shot, it looks like you are using auto layout but you are not doing auto layout (you have no constraints). You need to position these interface elements with constraints.
Check your constraints in interface builder first and make sure that your UITableViewDelegate is returning the correct heightForRowAtIndexPath:, then report back.
In Interface Builder, if you select one of these views that is not sized correct and then select the "size inspector" tab on the panel on the right (option+command+5), if you have no constraints defined, IB will warn you:
The selected views have no constraints. At build time, explicit left, top, width, and height constraints will be generated for the view.
If you don't see that sort of message, your screen snapshots suggest that you likely have constraints defined for the view which are tantamount to the same thing, left/top/width/height constraints.
The problem is that when you transition to a real device with different width, the layout of the view will not be correct.
If, however, you defined your own constraints (for example, notably using trailing constraint instead of width constraint, using bottom constraint rather than height constraint), you'll find the views will be better adjusted for the device's actual dimensions.
In your first example, iOS 8 will automatically adjust the row height of the cell if you had defined constraints. Something like:

I'm showing it to you in VFL, but you can define it in IB, too. The key point is add constraints so that the vertical height is now unambiguous (i.e. the cell height will be adjusted to fit the labels) and the width is not hard coded, but rather the labels will expand/contract to fill it depending upon the device size.
Conceptually the exact same problem occurs in your second example, that you don't have leading and trailing constraints, but rather IB has defaulted to using leading and width constraints, which will not work as you go from device to device. For example, if you just want the text view, but have it adjust for the size of the device's screen, you might have constraints equivalent to the following VFL.
