Is there a more modern implementation of CORBA? - corba

I'm figuring that CORBA is considered a legacy technology that just refuses to die. That being said, I'm curious if there are any known standards out there that are preferred (and are also as platform independent.)
Thoughts? TIA!

Many organization are moving to WebServices and the open standards relating to them (HTTP, WS-*) as alternatives to Corba.
This article provides a comparison of the two technologies and offers some recommendations on when to use which.
If you really care about platform independence and protocol standardization - then the WS-* standards are something to look into.

There is now a state of the art modern CORBA implementation using C++11, TAOX11. This uses the new IDL to C++11 language mapping. For TAOX11 see the TAOX11 website. TAOX11 is supported on a wide range of platforms and compilers.

I have recently tried Google Protocol buffers, they seem rather similar to CORBA by design (some kind of IDL with compiler, binary compact messages, etc). It is probably one of the many possible successors.
Web services are good for the right tasks but creating and parsing messages needs more time and text based messages are more bulky than binary ones. REST API with JSON looks like a good solution where binary protocols do not fit well.

ICE from ZeroC aims to be a "better CORBA".
Unfortunately their licensing terms are crap (at least last time I checked with them), as they do not sell developer licenses but only (roughly) per-installation terms.
It is offered via GPL license too, if you can live with this.

Not that I know off. Maybe you can write your own and contribute it back to TAO. Maybe consider a scripting language for a client, like Ruby with the R2CORBA implementation which is interoperable with TAO

What is an example of a situation where CORBA would be used? Is it just a matter of using an interface language (e.g. Java) to 'talk' to all applications?
CORBA might be used to build a language-independent, O/S-independent distributed system. For example, C++ on Linux developers could build a common distributed system with Java on Windows developers. IDL describes the interfaces that bind the two implementations over a common substrate (CORBA).
CORBA is also useful when building a plain old distributed object system - it has a rich set of services defined and is generally very well thought out. However, these days - depending on the language - many folks have opted for either simpler (e.g., RMI, protocol buffers) or message-based protocols (e.g., HTTP) for building distributed systems, so it's not as common. CORBA suffered from design-by-committee (esp on things like security).

TAO is one of the most popular C++ CORBA implementation available today. The project is pretty active.
CORBA technology vendors killed each other through incompatible and bureaucratic implementations. Today, you can safely consider CORBA to be a legacy technology; that is, use it if you have to deal with components that already expose themselves through COBA. Otherwise, stick to modern RPC/distribution standards like SOAP, or, better yet, REST/JSON.
Sorry. To answer your question: CORBA was intended to be what SOAP, REST, and others are today. Real-life examples of applications of the latter are examples of things attempted with the former.

Real world usage of concatenative programming languages

What are some real-world projects done in concatenative languages like Forth, Factor, Joy, etc.?
factorcode.org, concatenative.org and tinyvid.tv are powered by Furnace, a Factor web server and framework.
PostScript is concatenative, and there's obviously a huge number of applications of PostScript. It's just not a general purpose programming language.
As Greg wrote, postscript is the mammoth example.
Concatenative languages pop up everywhere, quite naturally, because of the trivial nature of the language runtime. It's a favourite for many firmwares: I first encountered Forth "in the flesh" in the bootloader for a Sun Sparcstation. It powers the firmware for the OLPC.
Ocaml's parent, Caml was based on realising the semantics of functional programming as the Categorical Abstract Machine (the CAM in Caml).
Bibtex uses a concatenative language to compile style files.
There is the somewhat-obsolete but very cool Quartus Forth for Palm which allowed full compiled application development on the Palm device (Forth as a minimalist language works rather well in those circumstances). Their home page lists several Palm apps.

I suspect PowerMOPS (the successor to Neon) may elude the definition of concatenative because its big deal is adding object-orientation, which implies instances.

The script language is a Forth-like stack-based language deliberately designed to be stateless and not Turing complete. Statelessness ensures that once a transaction is added to the block chain, there is no condition which renders it permanently unspendable. Turing-incompleteness (specifically, a lack of loops or gotos) makes the script language less flexible and more predictable, greatly simplifying the security model.
Part of the firmware on Macs (at least in the older PowerPC models) was written in Forth.

What is the best Delphi n-tier low bandwidth technology?

I need to deploy a Delphi app in an environment that needs centralized data and file storage system (for document imaging) but has multiple branch offices with relatively poor inter connectivity. I believe a 3 tier database application is the best way to go so I can provide a rich desktop experience with relatively light-weight data transfer needs. So far I have looked briefly at Delphi Datasnap, kbmMW and Remobjects SDK. It seems that kbmMW and Remobjects SDK use the least bandwidth. Does anyone have any experience in deploying any of these technologies in a challenging environments with a significant number of users (I need to support 700+)? Thanks!
Depends if you are tied to remote datasets. If you aren't dataset bound then SOAP would likely be a good choice. Or, what I've done is write my own protocol that is similar to SOAP in nature. This was done before SOAP was standard and I'm glad I did - this gives you the ability to control more of the flow of data. It's given that if you have poor connectivity then you will be spending time supporting it. It's very nice if it's your own code you are supporting versus having to wait on a vendor. (Although KBM and REM are known to be pretty good vendors.)
Personal note: 700 users in a document imaging application over poor connectivity sounds like a mess. Spend the money on upgrading connectivity as it'll be cheaper in the long run.
Both kbmMW and RO SDK offer binary format, which is more compact than SOAP format,specially you are working with documents.
RO sdk seems to offer more GUI tools to help you doing your services.
Also give a RealThinClient SDK a look, it's a lightweight remoting framework.
But what ever framework you go with, your design of work will make it fast or slow, I have some applications working on slow 128kb lines, and it's working perfect without any user complain, but I don't do a large transfer for files.
One thing to remember...its not the number of users, but the number of them using the resources at the same time that will be the issue. Attempt to develop your application "server stateless" if at all possible, this will allow greater flexibility in the long term if you find you have to add more servers to the pool to support your customer base. The hardest thing about n-tier is scaling beyond the first server...plan on that from the start. Each request should not know anything about a prior request...or at the very least the request should have a way of passing the context so the server can look it up in a session table or something.
Personally, I would recommend RemObjects. I have used it with good results.
I don't know if it's the very best / most efficient (glad you asked this question!), but I've had good results w/RemObjects SDK + DataAbstract. The latter made much of the plumbing details less involved, which was helpful. Still implementing, but so far so good.
If you really wanna go "low-bandwidth" use BSD Sockets API - that'll give you full control over what's being sent and there you can send as little information as you want. Of course then you'll have to implement all the tiers yourself, but hey - that's still an option :D

Metamodelling tools

What tools are available for metamodelling?
Especially for developing diagram editors, at the moment trying out Eclipse GMF

Your question is simply too broad for a single answer - due to many aspects.
First, meta-modelling is not a set term, but rather a very fuzzy thing, including modelling models of models and reaching out to terms like MDA.
Second, there are numerous options to developing diagram editors - going the Eclipse way is surely a nice option.
To get you at least started in the Eclipse department:
have a look at MOF, that is architecture for "meta-modelling" from the OMG (the guys, that maintain UML)
from there approach EMOF, a sub set which is supported by the Eclipse Modelling Framework in the incarnation of Ecore.
building something on top of GMF might be indeed a good idea, because that's the way existing diagram editors for the Eclipse platform take (e.g. Omondo's EclipseUML)
there are a lot of tools existing in the Eclipse environment, that can utilize Ecore - I simply hope, that GMF builts on top of Ecore itself.
Dia has an API for this - I was able to fairly trivially frig their UML editor into a basic ER modelling tool by changing the arrow styles. With a DB reversengineering tool I found in sourceforge (took the schema and spat out dia files) you could use this to document databases. While what I did was fairly trivial, the API was quite straightforward and it didn't take me that long to work out how to make the change.
If you're of a mind to try out Smalltalk There used to be a Smalltalk meta-case framework called DOME which does this sort of thing. If you download VisualWorks, DOME is one of the contributed packages.
GMF is a nice example. At the core of this sits EMF/Ecore, like computerkram sais. Ecore is also used for the base of Eclipse's UML2 . The prestige use case and proof of concept for GMF is certainly UML2 Tools.
Although generally a UML tool, I would look at StarUML. It supports additional modules beyond what are already built in. If it doesn't have what you need built in or as a module, I supposed you could make your own, but I don't know how difficult that is.
Meta-modeling is mostly done in Smalltalk.
You might want to take a look at MOOSE (http://moose.unibe.ch). There are a lot of tools being developed for program understanding. Most are Smalltalk based. There is also some java and c++ work.
Two of the most impressive tools are CodeCity and Mondrian. CodeCity can visualize code development over time, Mondrian provides scriptable visualization technology.
And of course there is the classic HotDraw, which is also available in java.
For web development there is also Magritte, providing meta-descriptions for Seaside.
I would strongly recommend you look into DSM (Domain Specific Modeling) as a general topic, meta-modeling is directly related. There are eclipse based tools like GMF that currently require java coding, but integrate nicely with other eclipse tools and UML. However there are two other classes out there.
MetaCase which I will call a pure DSM tool as it focuses on allowing a developer/modeler with out nearly as much coding create a usable graphical model. Additionally it can be easily deployed for others to use. GMF and Microsoft's Beta software factory/DSM tool fall into this category.
Pure Meta-modeling tools which are not intended for DSM tooling, code generation, and the like. I do not follow these tools as closely as I am interested in applications that generate tooling for SMEs, Domain Experts, and others to use and contribute value to an active project not modeling for models sake, or just documentation and theory.

As a metamodelling platform it does provide functionalities and mechanisms to quickly develop your own DSL and allows you to focus on the models needs (business requirements, conceptual level design/specification).
